When it comes to taking any of the CCIE Exams, preparation is half of the battle. The other half? Knowing exactly what you are preparing for! If you are considering becoming certified in any of the tracks, it’s time to take a look at the CCIE exams a little more closely. Each of the CCIE exams (Routing and Switching, Voice, Security, and Service Provider) contains both a written test and a lab exam, which you must pass in order to become a Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert.
CCIE Written Exam:
As mentioned, CCIE exams always contain a written-component. The written exam for each track is designed to test your knowledge of networking concepts and equipment commands. The lab exams, however, differ greatly in their expectations. They also last 8 hours, while the written exam lasts only two. Here are some of the specifics regarding the lab exams:
CCIE Lab Exam
CCIE Routing and Switching Lab Exam:
These CCIE R&S exams are designed to test the skills of expert engineers, who specialize in implementing complex network infrastructure. Following the written exam, you can begin preparing for the lab exam, which must be taken within 18 months of passing the written test. During the lab exam, you are expected to successfully configure real equipment and troubleshoot glitches within a specified time.
CCIE Security Lab Exam
Once you have passed the written exam, you have up to three years to take the CCIE Security Lab Exam. Like all CCIE Exams, this lab exam offers you the chance to demonstrate your expertise. More specifically, the goal of the lab exam is to certify that you are capable of creating a secured working network within a specified timeframe.
CCIE Service Provider Lab Exam
During the CCIE Service Provider Lab Exam, you will be tested on your ability to configure a service provider network in a limited amount of time. Like the CCIE exams for Routing and Switching and Voice, you are required to take the lab exam within 18 months of successfully completing the written exam.
CCIE Voice Lab Exam
All CCIE exams allow you to demonstrate both your knowledge and hands-on know-how; the CCIE Voice Lab Exam is no exception. The lab exam offers you the opportunity to develop a successful Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) solution within a timed environment. By mastering both the CCIE Written and Lab exams in any of the available tracks, you will achieve your goal: to become a Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert.
