Route Exchange and BGP Decisions with Confederations

Even though routes are exchanged between sub-ASs of a confederation via EBGP, all the IBGP rules still apply in order for the whole AS to still behave as a single routing domain. The EBGP NEXT_HOP is still carried within the AS, as is the MED and LOCAL_PREF values. As far as the BGP decision algorithm, the only changes are in the way BGP routes to outside the confederation compared to how BGP routes inside the confederation. Without confederations, EBGP routes are preferred ..

Network Address Translation

NAT, defined in RFC 1631, allows a host that does not have a valid registered IP address to communicate with other hosts on the Internet. NAT has gained such wide-spread acceptance that the majority of enterprise IP networks today use private IP addresses for most hosts on the network and use a small block of public IP addresses, with NAT translating between the two. NAT translates, or changes, one or both IP addresses inside a packet as it passes through a router. (Ma..

The Internet NAPs

The network access points (NAPs) were intended as the key peering points for NSPs that provided core routing services for the NFSNET's regional distribution networks. The NAPs were modeled on the FIXs, which were used to connect the Big Four during the operation of the NSFNET backbone. Traffic within the NAPs, however, was supposed to operate freely of the acceptable usage policy (AUP).   Although the NSF NAP Manager solicitation had some admirable goals in statis..

Setting SNMP Timeout Values

You can use the following configuration command to adjust a router's SNMP trap timeout value: Router#configure terminal Enter configuration commands, one per line.  End with CNTL/Z. Router(config)#snmp-server trap-timeout 60 Router(config)#end Router# To adjust a router's SNMP inform timeout value, use the follow configuration commands: Router#configure terminal Enter configuration commands, one per line.  End with CNTL/Z. Router(config)#snmp-server inform timeou..

Setting the OSPF RID

There are several ways to set the OSPF Router ID (RID). The easiest is to create and configure a Loopback interface: Router5#configure terminal Enter configuration commands, one per line.  End with CNTL/Z. Router5(config)#interface Loopback0 Router5(config-if)#ip address 172.25.25.6 255.255.255.255 Router5(config-if)#exit Router5(config)#end Router5# If you don't want to use a Loopback interface, you can still force the router ID to use a particular IP address with th..
