MPLS/VPN Architecture Overview

Virtual private networks (VPNs) have evolved using two major VPN models: overlay VPN and peer-to-peer VPN. The overlay VPN model, most commonly used in a service provider network, dictates that the design and provisioning of virtual circuits across the backbone must be complete prior to any traffic flow. In the case of an IP network, this means that even though the underlying technology is connectionless, it requires a connection-oriented approach to provision the service. F..

External LSA (Link-State Type 5)

External LSA describes destinations outside the OSPF domain. A route received via another routing protocol and redistributed into OSPF is considered external to OSPF. Any destination that is not originated by the local OSPF process is also considered external.   Refer to Figure 9-14. Router R7 redistributes 140.10.0.0 into OSPF; 140.10.0.0 was not originated by the local OSPF process. In Figure 9-17, R7's link-state ID field is set to the external destination adve..

Cisco Secure Intrusion Detection System and Catalyst Services Modules

This section covers tools that are useful for managing network security. Cisco Secure IDS, formerly known as NetRanger, is designed to efficiently and effectively protect your network against intruders from inside and outside of your networking domain. Note The CCIE Security written exam still refers to the term NetRanger. The new CCIE Security exam no longer tests the NetSonar application. NetRanger is now commonly known as Cisco Secure Intrusion Detection System or Cisco ..

Monitoring Frame Relay SVC

Example 11-5 shows the status of the show frame-relay map command at R1, after the Frame Relay SVC configurations are completed. In the show frame-relay map output shown in Example 11-5, the output shows that the Frame Relay connection is an SVC circuit and broadcast traffic is allowed to be sent over the SVC. IETF encapsulation is used. Example 11-5. show frame-relay map Output R1#show frame-relay map Serial4/0.1 (up): point-to-point dlci, dlci 100(0x64,0x1840), broadcast, ..

Redistributing External Routes into OSPF

The redistribute configuration command allows you to redistribute routes from another dynamic routing protocol into an OSPF process: Router1#configure terminal Enter configuration commands, one per line.  End with CNTL/Z. Router1(config)#router ospf 55 Router1(config-router)#redistribute eigrp 11 subnets   Router1(config-router)#exit Router1(config)#end Router1# One of the dangers when redistributing between routing protocols is that you will accidentally im..
