RF Signal Characteristics

RF signals are cyclic and vary in time continuously. The number of cycles that occur in the signal per second is its frequency, which can vary throughout what is referred to as the frequency spectrum. The unit of frequency is hertz (Hz), and wireless LAN signals fall roughly into the 2.4-GHz and 5-GHz portions of the frequency spectrum. The process of modulation causes the RF signal to occupy a portion of the frequency spectrum, which is known as bandwidth. In addition to fr..

Operation of RIPng

RIPng for IPv6 is based on RIPv2, but it is not an extension of RIPv2; it is an entirely separate protocol. RIPng does not support IPv4, so to use RIP to route both IPv4 and IPv6, you must run RIPv1 or v2 for IPv4 and RIPng for IPv6. RIPng uses the same timers, procedures, and message types as RIPv2. For example, like RIPv2 it uses a 30-second update timer jittered to prevent message synchronization, a 180-second timeout period, a 120-second garbage-collection timer, and a 1..

Distribution Routers

Distribution routers consolidate connections from access routers. They are often arranged in a configuration that is resilient to failure of a single core router. Distribution routers usually contain topological information about their own region, but they forward packets to a backbone router for inter-region routing. NOTE In smaller regions, distribution and backbone routers may be one and the same. In larger regions, distribution routers themselves may form a hierarchy...

Using Static Routing

The first version sends all packets destined to the single host 10.35.15.5 out through the Ethernet0 interface. In this case, the router will need to figure out which device on this segment to forward the packet to, because it must put the MAC address of the next hop router in the Layer 2 frame header. The standard mechanism for associating IP addresses with MAC addresses is the Address Resolution Protocol (ARP). The router will send out an ARP request onto the Ethernet segme..

Using OSPF on Dial Interfaces

In this example, Router4 will dial into Router1 by using an ISDN circuit: Router4#configure terminal Enter configuration commands, one per line.  End with CNTL/Z. Router4(config)#username Router1 password 0 cisco Router4(config)#interface BRI0 Router4(config-if)#ip address 192.168.15.4 255.255.255.0 Router4(config-if)#encapsulation ppp Router4(config-if)#ip ospf demand-circuit Router4(config-if)#dialer map ip 192.168.15.1 broadcast 4165550000 Router4(config-if)#dialer-g..
